Automotive Safety & Cybersecurity Template for Polarion — Assessed Against 5 Standards

At Nextedy, we believe that getting your Polarion project right for automotive shouldn’t take months of consulting. ISO 26262, ISO/SAE 21434, ASPICE, AIAG-VDA FMEA, ISO 21448 — each standard demands structured evidence, bidirectional traceability, and auditable compliance. And they all need to work together.

That’s why we built the Nextedy Automotive Template — a preconfigured Polarion project with everything an automotive safety and cybersecurity team needs, ready to evaluate online.

68% “Largely Achieved” across 5 automotive standards — measured clause by clause, not estimated. With a clear path to 80%+.

A Complete AEB Reference Implementation

The template is built around an Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system with 3 subsystems and 7 components. It covers the full V-model lifecycle — from customer needs through system, subsystem, and design requirements, all the way to test execution results.

Every requirement carries an ASIL field, a safety relevance flag, and optional ASIL decomposition with rationale. Traceability is visible across the RTM PowerSheet with color-coded columns — from the first customer need down to the last test case.

Risk Analysis — Native in Polarion

One of the most common challenges in automotive projects is keeping risk analysis in sync with requirements. Excel-based FMEAs drift from the source of truth. External tools need manual export/import.

With the Nextedy template, all risk analysis lives inside Polarion using Nextedy Risksheet. Nine templates cover the full spectrum:

  • HARA — 18 hazards with automated ASIL calculation and 5 safety goals
  • System FMEA — 37 failure modes with downstream risk propagation
  • Subsystem & Component DFMEA — 234 failure modes across all architecture levels, including DFA/CCF analysis
  • Process FMEA — manufacturing process analysis per AIAG-VDA
  • Control Plans — risk control effectiveness tracking linked to FMEA

No Excel exports. No sync scripts. No version drift.

Cybersecurity — Fully Integrated

The cybersecurity domain isn’t bolted on as an afterthought. It’s woven into the same traceability model:

  • Threat Analysis (TARA) for the AEB Controller and V2X Transceiver with CVSS-aligned attack feasibility scoring
  • 7 cybersecurity goals with CAL ratings, linked to risk controls and system requirements
  • Penetration testing and fuzz testing test cases with actual execution results from Polarion Test Runs
  • V&V dashboards showing verification coverage, traceability gaps, and validation summary

The Cybersecurity Verification PowerSheet connects TARA records directly to test cases, showing which threats have been verified and what the test results are — in real time.

Test Execution — From Specification to Results

Test cases in the template aren’t just specifications on paper. They connect to Polarion Test Runs with live execution status displayed directly in every verification PowerSheet:

  • Color-coded pass/fail/blocked indicators with clickable links to test run records
  • Test method and expected result fields on every test case
  • A sample test run with 16 test records demonstrating the complete chain

Process Governance — Audit-Ready

Automotive auditors expect more than data — they expect controlled processes. The template includes:

  • Four-eyes principle enforced at the workflow level — authors cannot approve their own work
  • Safety roles (Safety Manager, Safety Engineer, Independent Assessor) with reviewer independence tracking
  • Document workflows with e-signatures for Safety Plan, Safety Case, and Risk Specification
  • Change management with safety impact assessment and baseline reference

Measuring Compliance — Not Just Checking Boxes

Generic compliance checklists tell you what to do. They don’t tell you how well you’re doing it.

The template includes a process assessment framework with ASPICE-style F/L/P/N ratings applied to individual regulatory requirements. Each requirement is assessed across four dimensions:

Implementation Evidence — what does the template provide?
Execution Evidence — what data demonstrates the process is followed?
Implementation Gap — what’s missing in the template?
Execution Gap — what data or artifacts are still needed?

The dashboard groups 23 assessment modules across 5 standards, each with its own sub-score:

  • ISO 26262 — 7 modules (Parts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9)
  • ISO/SAE 21434 — 6 modules (Clauses 5–9, 15)
  • ASPICE Cybersecurity — 5 modules (MAN.7, SEC.1–4)
  • AIAG VDA FMEA — 2 modules (7-Step + FMEA-MSR)
  • ISO 21448 SOTIF — 3 modules (Specification, Scenarios, Validation)

This gives teams a clear, honest picture of where they stand — and a traceable roadmap for what to improve next.

Configuration Over Code

The entire Automotive Template is built from declarative configuration files — XML for work item types, YAML for traceability models and PowerSheet layouts, JSON for risksheet templates. There are no Java extensions, no custom plugins, no compiled code.

This means the solution is:

  • Upgradeable — Polarion version upgrades work seamlessly
  • Auditable — every change is versioned in SVN
  • Transferable — export the configuration to seed any new project
  • Customizable — adapt fields, enums, layouts, and scoring without developers
